Fans of "Call of Duty" have an exciting new film to look forward to. The upcoming live-action movie is officially scheduled to arrive in theatres on June 30, 2028. The film will be based on the popular 'Modern Warfare' storyline, known for its realistic military action and memorable characters.
The screenplay is being co-written by Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the "Yellowstone" universe and writer of "Sicario", in association with filmmaker Peter Berg, who is directing the movie. Berg is well known for action thrillers such as "Patriots Day", "Lone Survivor" and "Deepwater Horizon". Both Sheridan and Berg will serve as producers, together with David Glasser of 101 Studios.
The filmmakers confirmed at the Fanatics Fest 2026 in New York City that the story will take place in the gritty 'Modern Warfare' universe of the CoD games. The movie is expected to capture the spirit of fan-favourite characters, including Captain John Price and the elite Task Force 141.
The project is a joint production between Paramount Pictures and game publisher Activision, with filming expected to begin in early 2027. The partnership is said to be part of a long-term plan to build a larger "Call of Duty" cinematic universe. If the first film succeeds, it could lead to more movies and even a television series based on the franchise.
Although Paramount has not officially announced the cast, industry reports suggest that Mark Wahlberg is the leading candidate for a major role. According to entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, Wahlberg is currently in talks with the studio. However, nothing is official yet.
Wahlberg's possible casting has attracted attention, given his long and fruitful working relationship with director Berg. The pair have previously worked together on the aforementioned projects. Fans have speculated about whether Wahlberg could play an American military leader such as General Shepherd or join the famous Task Force 141 as one of its key members.
