Amazon MGM Studios, which is backing the show, accelerated the production timeline for the massive hit series to maintain momentum, since the idea is not to keep fans waiting for long between seasons. Filming is happening predominantly in Los Angeles and Santa Clarita, California.
Director Frederick E. O. Toye, who directed standout episodes in the previous seasons, is returning this time around as well. Creators Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner are now handling showrunning duties.
While the central trio of Ella Purnell (Lucy), Aaron Moten (Maximus), and Walton Goggins (The Ghoul) are returning, the Wasteland is expanding with the introduction of some characters played by househould names such as Aaron Paul ("Breaking Bad", "Westworld"), Manny Jacinto ("The Good Place", "The Acolyte"), Emily Mortimer ("The Newsroom"), Thomasin McKenzie ("Jojo Rabbit"), Annabel O'Hagan, and Dave Register have been promoted to series regulars.
According to the creative team, Season 3 will borrow elements from the game that were intentionally held back during the first two seasons. Co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet teased a branching narrative mimicking the source video games, with characters navigating different geographic areas of the Wasteland, including a focus on Colorado and expanded lore surrounding the Enclave.
Will there be a Season 4? Most likely, since Amazon is strongly confident about the show. Recently, actor Aaron Moten (who plays Maximus) reportedly revealed that the showrunners have a clear, structured ending in mind designed to unfold across six seasons.
