Any new Vetrimaaran project accompanies a measure of elation — and, of course, a bit of trepidation. Two reasons. One, their impressive track record. Two, Vetrimaaran takes a long time to complete his projects. So, this new non-Vada Chennai development unveiled on Friday has some of his fans both excited and checking their excitement.
The project in question is "Thamizh Murugan", the title teaser of which hints at the filmmaker taking on his most ambitious epic yet. Earlier teased with the code "DxV", this project marks the highly anticipated fifth collaboration between the blockbuster director-actor duo. The script is based on the book of the same name by the acclaimed Tamil writer Arivumathi, whose name is mentioned in the title teaser. This text is the ancient history of Murugan as recorded in the historic Sangam literature.
Dhanush will play the titular role, characterised as "The Eternal Protector, warrior, THE KING & LEADER of the Thamizh people and lands". The title promo features a commander atop a war elephant, charging through armies with his 'vel' (sacred spear), and an athletic physique. However, Dhanush's face is obscured by a strong light.
The makers have roped in Sai Abhyankkar ("Karuppu") as the composer. Dhanush's Wunderbar Films is jointly bankrolling the project with the banner Production Miles To Go.
This announcement follows another Murugan-centric project, but a Telugu-language project, led by NTR Jr., helmed by Trivikram. Its teaser poster triggered social media debates around the deity's place of origin.
It's not yet known when "Thamizh Murugan" will be shot and completed since both Vetrimaaran and Dhanush have incredibly packed line-ups. It is expected in late 2027 or 2028, as Vetrimaaran is currently working on "Arasan" and possibly another secret project. Dhanush is currently gearing up for the heavily promoted release of his star-studded action thriller "Om" on October 15, 2026.
"Arasan" is a spin-off of "Vada Chennai", set in the same universe, starring Silambarasan TR (STR). Vetrimaaran is also expected to get working on "Vada Chennai 2" sometime in the future. Interestingly, one speculation suggests that Vetrimaaran is building a narrative bridge where Dhanush's character (Anbu) and STR's character (Arasan) will cross paths. Vetrimaaran is also expected to resume the Suriya-starrer "Vaadivaasal" at some point. The project is currently on hold due to the scale-related complications. It is based on the 1959 classic novel by C.S. Chellappa.
Dhanush and Vetrimaaran have collaborated on four released films before Thamizh Murugan:" Polladhavan" (2007), "Aadukalam" (2011), "Vada Chennai" (2018), and "Asuran" (2019).
