After 'Lagaan', Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker to reunite for another cricket drama?
This highly anticipated film will focus on the life of legendary cricketer Lala Amarnath, independent India's first Test captain, and the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series. The narrative will intricately blend cricket, historical events surrounding the 1947 Partition, and profound human emotions
Aamir Khan has the habit of announcing many projects, but only one or two actually materialise. Earlier, the actor had mentioned that he would do a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, with Rajkumar Hirani. But that was put on hold due to script revisions. It was then reported

Earlier, the actor had mentioned that he would do a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, with Rajkumar Hirani. But that was put on hold due to script revisions. It was then reported that the two are doing a sequel to their 2009 hit "3 Idiots". Both projects will take a while to see the light of day. In the meantime, another interesting development has popped up, indicating a strong likelihood of happening —well, we hope so.
After 25 years, actor Aamir Khan and director Ashutosh Gowariker are coming together again for a new sports drama titled "Lalkaar" (also reported as "Lalkaara"). The film marks their first major collaboration since the critically acclaimed "Lagaan", which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2001. The news has been doing the rounds for some time, but it seems there is finally some momentum, since the other two projects are put on hold. The news follows the re-release of "Lagaan" in select Indian theatres to commemorate its 25 years.
"Lalkaar" is a historical sports drama based on the life of legendary cricketer Lala Amarnath, who became independent India's first Test captain, and is revered as the "father figure" of Indian cricket. Set against the emotional backdrop of the 1947 Partition, the story focuses on the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series. The film aims to blend cricket, history, and human emotions into a powerful cinematic experience.
Aamir Khan will play the role of Lala Amarnath and is expected to undergo a major physical transformation to portray the cricket legend. Actor and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar is in advanced talks to join the cast in a key role. He is likely to play a Pakistani cricketer who was Amarnath's close friend before Partition divided the two nations.
The screenplay comes from Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh, with the backing of Excel Entertainment in association with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani. Pre-production is currently underway, with location scouting and casting in progress. Filming is scheduled to begin in October 2026, while the makers are targeting a theatrical release in December 2027.
Apart from "Lalkaar", Aamir has another partition-based drama, but one he is producing: the much-awaited period drama "Lahore 1947", which has been officially renamed "Batwara 1947". Aamir Khan Productions and Sunny Deol recently announced the title change with a new motion poster. According to the makers, the word "Lahore" was removed to avoid political sensitivities and possible geopolitical controversies ahead of release.
