'Drishyam 3' Box Office Collection: 2nd biggest opening for a Malayalam film loading as Mohanlal starrer hits theatres on May 21

Prithviraj directorial 'Empuraan' starring Mohanlal, which opened at nearly Rs 70 crore worldwide, is the highest opener in Malayalam

If reports are to be believed, Drishyam 3 is set to become the second biggest opening for a Malayalam film when it hits the big screens on May 21.

The current highest opening is also in Mohanlal's name. Prithviraj directorial Empuraan starring Mohanlal opened at nearly Rs 70 crore worldwide.

The Mohanlal-starrer directed by Jeethu Joseph is nearing Rs 25 crore gross worldwide, according to data released by Sacnilk on Wednesday night. Around Rs 10.5 crore of this gross collection comes from the domestic box office, including Rs 6.75 crore from Kerala alone. Once spot bookings for Drishyam 3 are taken into account, these figures are set to surge even further.

The overseas box offices in the Gulf, North America, the UK and Australia are also seeing high demand for Drishyam 3. Sacnilk predicts that the final opening day advance sales could go as high as Rs 27-30 crore before the first show begins. This could ensure that Drishyam 3 comfortable crosses Rs 40 crore in worldwide collection, as per estimates.

While the Day 1 collections is entirely dependent on the popularity of the Drishyam franchise, the box office run in the following days will be based on reviews and word-of-mouth.

Drishyam 3, originally scheduled for release in the first week of April, was postponed due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Concerns over the situation in the Gulf countries, a key overseas market, could have impacted the movie’s international box office collections.

The new release date, May 21, coincides with the birthday of Mohanlal, making it a special occasion for fans.

The film’s shooting began on September 22, 2025, and wrapped up on December 2. Filming took place across multiple picturesque locations, including Thodupuzha, Vagamon, Ernakulam, and Thiruvalla.

The trailer of Drishyam 3 hints that the police are looking to reopen the murder case once again as Georgekutty played by Mohanlal makes plans to save his family from prison once again. Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil and others will reprise their roles from the earlier movies.

Meanwhile, the Hindi remake of Drishyam 3 is set to release worldwide on October 2.
