Actor-director RJ Balaji's "Karuppu" has performed significantly better on its second day compared to Suriya's other much-anticipated big releases ", Kanguva" and "Retro". On Day 2, it collected 51% more than on the first day, with a net total of Rs 23.40 crore. On the first day, it had earned Rs 15.50 crore. As of now, the net domestic total stands at Rs 38.90 crore, with cumulative gross around Rs 45.04 crore, reports box office tracker Sacnilk.
Combined with the Rs 21 crore overseas figure collected so far, the final worldwide collection is now clocked at Rs 66.04 crore.
When compared to the second-day performance of "Kanguva" and "Retro", what we saw was that the former held a significantly higher opening day record (Rs 24.00 crore), but mixed to negative reviews caused it to crash by over 60% on Day 2. "Karuppu", however, did the opposite — rebounding from an initial release delay and completely outperforming "Kanguva" on its second day.
On the other hand, "Retro", directed by Karthik Subbaraj, benefitted from a traditional front-loaded box office performance with Rs 19.25 crore, opening on a May Day holiday, but then saw a steep 59.7% drop on Day 2. In contrast, "Karuppu" did the exact opposite — starting lower due to release delays but skyrocketing on its second day thanks to largely positive word-of-mouth.
"Karuppu" is also tracking way ahead of Suriya's "Etharkkum Thunindhavan", which took two full days to gross Rs 25 crore worldwide.
This two-day performance clearly indicates that "Karuppu" has finally delivered what Suriya fans have been waiting for a long time — a satisfying overall experience, despite mixed responses from certain corners.
