Netflix has officially confirmed that “Bridgerton” Season 5 will premiere in 2027, breaking the series’s familiar two-year gap between seasons for the first time. The announcement was made by Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria during the company’s Upfront presentation in New York.

Since its debut in 2020, “Bridgerton” has become one of the leading franchises of Netflix, with each season driving major viewership, social media buzz and renewed interest in period romance dramas. Previous seasons typically arrived after long production gaps, making the 2027 confirmation notable for fans who had expected another extended wait. Many people believe that Netflix did this to maintain its flagship show’s success amid fierce competition in the market.

The upcoming season, currently in production outside London, will focus on Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. Their story follows the emotional aftermath of the death of John Stirling, a loss that deeply affected both women. According to Netflix’s ‘Tudum’, Season 5 begins two years later as Francesca re-enters society for practical reasons, only to confront unexpected feelings when Michaela returns to London.

The new chapter will also mark Bridgerton’s “first same-gender central love story”, a major milestone for the franchise. Showrunner Jess Brownell described the season as an important moment for the series, saying, “It feels groundbreaking. Obviously, there are a lot of great shows that have depicted queer love. We’re not the first by any means. But to make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.”

Brownell added that while the season will explore grief and longing, it will remain true to the tone audiences expect from the show. “It’s going to be a season about queer joy. It is not going to be a season about queer trauma,” she said, promising the series’ signature mix of romance, humour and emotional depth. She also teased that one word defines the coming episodes: “yearning.”

Dodd shared her enthusiasm about returning to tell Francesca's story, “When you spend so much time with a character, you genuinely do want them to be happy.” Baduza echoed that excitement, saying the team hopes to present “a realistic view of queer love onscreen” while still delivering the happily ever after fans expect from “Bridgerton”.

The season is inspired by ‘When He Was Wicked' by Julia Quinn, but the adaptation of Francesca and Michaela is expected to take a completely new direction. This creative shift has already sparked conversation among longtime viewers, adding even more anticipation to the next chapter.

For Netflix, the early confirmation of Season 5 does more than update release plans. It signals confidence in a franchise that continues to shape pop culture and generate worldwide attention. And for fans, the biggest surprise may be simple — this time, the wait for “Bridgerton” just got shorter.
