The narrative is said to be deeply inspired by a traditional Korean folktale about a native rodent that shifts into human form by consuming discarded fingernails. The series introduces us to Je Moon-jae (played by Ryu Jun-yeol), a reclusive novelist dealing with severe social anxiety. His isolated life gets completely upended when he discovers his fingerprint recognition fails and his assets have vanished. A mysterious and calculating entity known only as "The Rat" has stolen his entire identity, look, and life.
Desperate to prove his own existence, Moon-jae joins forces with No-ja (played by Sul Kyung-gu), a ruthless loan shark turned private investigator who has been relentlessly after Moon-jae for an unpaid debt. Together, they embark on a dangerous and paranoid manhunt, though the line between truth and deception quickly blurs.
A 10-episode series, “Mousetrap” is helmed by director Kim Hong-sun, best known for “Voice”, “The Guest”, and “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area”. The script is by Lee Jae-gon (“Special Affairs Team TEN”).
“Mousetrap” marks the first collaboration between actors Ryu Jun-yeol and Sul Kyung-gu. Ryu Jun-yeol has appeared in notable roles in the film and television. The series “Reply 1988” (2015–2016) marked his breakout television role, which earned him a Baeksang Arts Award. He also starred in the acclaimed period film “A Taxi Driver” (2017), alongside Song Kang-ho. He also played a key role in the two-part "Alienoid" saga, as the magic-wielding Muruk.
Sul Kyung-gu is one of South Korea's ultimate veteran actors, famous for his extreme versatility and historically massive box office hits. His notable work includes “Peppermint Candy” (1999), his breakthrough film directed by Lee Chang-dong and “Oasis” (2002), a tragic romance that took home top honours at the Venice Film Festival.
