Box office record: 'Dhurandhar 2' on the cusp of epic $28 million collection in North America

Strong sequel hype and brand recall drove massive footfalls in the US and Canada, ultimately setting a new ceiling for Bollywood's box office potential

Amidst its epic theatrical success across the world, Ranveer Singh's spy-action drama Dhurandhar: The Revenge (Dhurandhar 2) is inching towards another box office record. The Aditya Dhar movie is on the verge of becoming the first Indian film to collect $28 million or more in North America.

According to unconfirmed reports, Dhurandhar: The Revenge has already collected $27.91 million in North America in 30 days. This means it is only a matter of time before the sequel to last year's most successful Hindi movie reaches the landmark in North America. The espionage thriller set in Pakistan has been well-received by cinemagoers in both the USA and Canada.

It was on Thursday, 16 April, that the box office data-tracking platform Sacnilk confirmed that Dhurandhar 2's total collection in the continent had reached $27.73 million and that it would be breaching $28 million within a few days. Earlier, the Bollywood movie had beaten Baahubali 2: The Conclusion's lifetime record of $20.80 million to become the best-performing Indian movie ever in North America. Its predecessor (Dhurandhar) had come painstakingly close to breaking the record held by S.S. Rajamouli's magnum opus but failed as its collection stopped at $20.65 million.

Sacnilk reported that Dhurandhar 2 would face a reduction in show counts in the US and Canada as the fifth weekend approached. However, reducing ticket rates helped to attract those wanting a rewatch despite the arrival of new releases. "After a Monday total of $52,000, the film witnessed a phenomenal 92 per cent surge on Tuesday, raking in $100,000. This massive mid-week spike pushed the cumulative total to a staggering $27.73 million as of Tuesday night. The ability to pull in $100,000 on a Tuesday in its fourth week proves that word-of-mouth remains potent and the film is still the first choice for the diaspora audience in the USA and Canada. The film is now moving toward the $28 million target," the Sacnilk report said.

Meanwhile, on Day 31 of its theatrical release—the fifth Saturday—the Ranveer Singh movie collected ₹4.65 crore with 25% occupancy, the highest recorded for the sequel since the fourth Sunday. Combined with the overseas gross of ₹419.60 crore, Dhurandhar 2 has earned a total worldwide gross of ₹1,748.91 crore, beating the lifetime worldwide total gross of Pushpa 2: The Rule (estimated at ₹1,742.10 crore).

Easily the most anticipated Hindi film of the year, Dhurandhar: The Revenge was released on 19 March in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. It stars Singh alongside R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi.
