The recently released "The Boys" Season 5 trailer hinted that the upcoming final chapter of Prime Video's much-celebrated superhero saga will have events with real-world parallels. That Oval Office scene in the trailer, for instance, is a key indicator.
Ahead of the premiere of the new season on April 8 on Prime Video, Kripke said something interesting in a recent interview with TV Guide. "I'm totally bummed out to say that we wrote [Season 5] before the [2024 presidential] election. This sounds super naive now, but I swear the plan was, let's write a '1984' version of what creeping authoritarianism looks like in America, and maybe everyone will be like, 'Whew! We really dodged a bullet,' — but instead we got hit with the bullet."
Kripke revealed that there is a line in Episode 7 of Season 5 that, to 'The Boys' team, was the "craziest" they could think of, and that much of what seemed "far-fetched" to them had really happened.
"A lot of things that [were] far-fetched for us, [that] we were like, 'That's crazy,' have come to pass in a way that's really, really f---ing troubling. I won't give it away, but there's a line in Episode 7 that Homelander says that was the craziest line we could think of, and it's already happened," he added.
In the trailer for "The Boys" Season 5, Homelander is at his most vain, convinced of a grand destiny. He is searching for Compound V, and the "good" guys know that if he gets his hands on it, he could become immortal—a far greater threat than before. Billy Butcher is determined to stop him with a virus, as everyone prepares for the chaos ahead. Meanwhile, Homelander finds himself in the Oval Office, an image with real-world implications?
As per the official logline, “In the fifth and final season, it’s Homelander’s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims. Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie are imprisoned in a ‘Freedom Camp.’ Annie struggles to mount a resistance against the overwhelming Supe force. Kimiko is nowhere to be found. But when Butcher reappears, ready and willing to use a virus that will wipe all Supes off the map, he sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change the world and everyone in it. It’s the climax, people. Big stuff’s gonna happen.”
"The Boys" Season 5 finale will drop on May 20.
