Box office: Did 'Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge' being denied Middle East screens save 'Pushpa 2's' records?

'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' reached striking distance of 'Pushpa 2: The Rule's' gross worldwide opening weekend reecord despite having a release ban across Gulf nations due to its theme

Box office collection records are expected to be broken by 'Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge'

Six days after its release, Aditya Dhar's spy-action thriller Dhurandhar: The Revenge has managed to cross ₹900 crore worldwide, data-tracking websites showed. The film is thus set to enter the 1,000 crore club in its first week itself.

The box office trackers also declared that Dhurandhar: The Revenge had registered a ₹210 crore gross internationally, which is the "highest-ever opening weekend collection for an Indian film in overseas markets."

However, despite this extraordinary start, Dhurandhar 2 failed to become the biggest Indian opening weekend grosser. Allu Arjun's Telugu blockbuster Pushpa 2: The Rule still holds that record. The 2024 action flick had managed a ₹795 crore gross worldwide opening weekend, while Dhurandhar 2 could not get past ₹760 crore, Sacnilk said in a report.

It has been rightly pointed out that missing out on the screens in West Asia curtailed the Bollywood movie's chances of getting past Pushpa 2. Needless to say, Middle Eastern countries have consistently been major contributors to the overseas box office of Indian movies. Both Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2 were not released theatrically in the Middle East—specifically in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries—due to censorship issues regarding the films' themes.

Trade estimates suggest that Dhurandhar 2 may have lost around ₹50 crore from the Gulf during its opening weekend alone, Sacnilk reported.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge's epic box office run

On its opening day, Dhurandhar 2 netted ₹102.55 crore, followed by ₹80.72 crore on Day 2, ₹113 crore on Day 3, ₹114.85 crore on Day 4, and ₹65 crore on Day 5.

Dhurandhar 2 now holds the record for the biggest extended opening weekend for a Bollywood movie worldwide, as well as at the domestic box office.

It is also the biggest Hindi earner at the Indian box office on Days 1, 2, 3, and 4. It is also the first Hindi movie to nett ₹100 crore in a single day twice, and to nett ₹75 crore in a single language on four consecutive days.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge is produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar and was released in the Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam languages.
