Fans of the original "Firefly" series, and its follow-up 2005 film "Serenity", have something exciting to look forward to. The leading man himself has confirmed that the show will be back in an animated revival, with the backing of 20th Television Animation.

Nathan Fillion and co-star Alan Tudyk announced the development during a podcast session at Awesome Con in Washington. The announcement was preceded by a viral social media campaign, which included cryptic video clips teasing a reunion. The campaign involves original cast members Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau.

The screenplay has been completed. The plot is reportedly set in the timeline between "Firefly" and "Serenity". Fillion's production company, Collision33, is producing the upcoming show jointly with 20th Television Animation.

Marc Guggenheim (“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “Arrow”) and Tara Butters (“Agent Carter,” “Reaper,” “Law & Order: SVU”) are handling showrunning duties, aside from the scripting process.

The original series, which revolved around a spaceship named 'Serenity' and its 'Firefly-class' crew, is set in the year 2517.

A customary introductory narrative constantly accompanied the show, which went, "After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system, and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonised. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided that all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the war, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggle to get by with the most basic technologies. A ship would bring you work. A gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: Find a crew. Find a job. Keep flying."
