Taapsee Pannu is back with another courtroom drama. Assi, directed by Anubhav Sinha, released in theatres this Friday (February 20) and has opened to largely excellent reviews. Such films generally tend to open on a low note and Assi is no different. The first day figures, however, aren't that bad if you consider all factors.
Assi has gotten a very small release count across India, heavily populated at the urban areas with the national multiplexes accounting for more than 90 percent of the film's screencount. The all-India occupancy of the film has remained under 10 percent but the excellent reviews should give the film a lift in the evening/night shows.
As per early estimates, Assi is heading for an opening day of Rs 2-3 crore nett in India. It is a respectable opening, especially when you consider that the Ramadan period has begun. This is the worst phase for films to gain commercial success, especially in Bollywood. The budget of Assi is extremely low, so the hope is that the film will cover costs including non-theatrical avenues.
Assi will hope to show big growth across the weekend, if it has to sustain at the box office. The absolute absence of any kind of competition is a plus. Shahid Kapoor's O'Romeo has dropped big time and is nearing its theatrical run while no other film at the moment is attracting the audience.
If the early reviews are true and people are loving Assi across the board, it could help for a Rs 10 crore weekend for the film, maybe more. But, all that depends on the trend in the evening and night shows. For now, it is a decent start for Assi.
