Lee Cronin's 'The Mummy' teaser promises a wilder, scarier take on iconic franchise

Hollywood has shown time and again that one project failing on first impact isn't really a deterrent to keep making the same property in a different form. There are currently two projects based on The Mummy — one that has already been completed and the other yet to be made. The completed one, directed by Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise), has unveiled its first glimpse in the form of a teaser.

From the looks of it, Cronin and team have gone the route of the 1970s-style possession thrillers, but with a Middle Eastern touch that borrows iconography and elements from the Mummy franchise. Without giving anything, the teaser concerns the disappearance of a young girl. The teaser and first poster are accompanied by the caption,  'What happened to Katie?'

The official synopsis reads: "The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace —eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare."

Lead cast members include Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcón.

Lee Cronin's The Mummy — the official title to avoid confusion with the previous entries — is gearing up for an April 17 release.

Recently, Brendan Fraser told Associated Press that he and Rachel Weisz will return for the fourth installment of the franchise they starred in, adding that it's the version he always wanted to see made. It will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (collectively known as Radio Silence). The directing duo is known for the horror-action thrillers Ready or Not and the recently released Abigail.

"The one I wanted to make is forthcoming," Fraser said. "And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want."
