There have been reports that filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is in the process of developing a sequel to his 2009 hit 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi. Some reports stated the project would be set 15 years later and would be named ‘4 Idiots’, while others mentioned ‘3 Idiots 2’ as the title.

However, they have been dismissed as rumours by Aamir and Madhavan, if their latest statements are anything to go by.

In his statement to Bollywood Hungama, Madhavan called the idea "great" but "far-fetched", adding, “All three of us — Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and I — are much older now. Where do we go in the sequel? What are our lives like now? It is an interesting thought. But hardly conducive to a proper sequel. I would love to work with Raju Hirani again. But 3 Idiots again? I think that would be idiotic.”

Aamir Khan, while expressing his interest in doing a sequel, told the portal that no one has approached him for the idea yet. “We had so much fun making that film! My character Rancho is the most popular character I’ve played. People still talk about Rancho. So yeah, I’d love to do a sequel. But no one has approached me.”

Meanwhile, Madhavan, who is basking in the success of Dhurandhar, will be next seen in Dhurandhar - Part 2 and the G.D. Naidu biopic, aside from Legacy, a Netflix original Tamil gangster drama. Rajkumar Hirani's last feature was Dunki, with Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu.
