In a decade-long career, David Lowery has constantly proved himself to be a filmmaker who can be counted upon to deliver the unusual and unpredictable — beginning with his 2013 crime drama Ain't Them Bodies Saints, followed by several attempts in the fantasy ("The Green Knight") and supernatural genres ("A Ghost Story").

After 2023's Peter Pan & Wendy, Lowery is back with something he hasn't explored before — a musical! Backed by celebrated indie production house A24, the first trailer and posters of Mother Mary give us a glimpse of a never-before-seen kind of experience, with a principal cast comprising mostly women, chiefly Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.

Notably, Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA twigs have written the music.

"Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance," said the official logline.

Other key cast members include Hunter Schafer ("Euphoria") and Alba Baptista ("Warrior Nun", "Borderline"), aside from Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs.

The film will open theatrically in April 2026.

Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway has two other high-profile projects coming up: Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (as the wife of Matt Damon's Odysseus) and The Devil Wears Prada 2 (co-starring Meryl Streep). She is also starring in Verity, the screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel of the same name.

Michaela Coel is known for her acclaimed performances in both independent and big-budget projects such as I May Destroy You and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
