The live-action adaptation of the God of War video game is finally moving forward. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the long-format project, at least the first two episodes, as per the latest update.

Currently in pre-production, the adaptation has been ordered for two seasons by the streaming giant. The cast is yet to be finalised as the process is currently underway.

Deadline reported that the show will focus on the 2018 game storyline centered on Kratos, the protagonist. As per the official logline, "'God of War’ follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

Toye is an accomplished filmmaker with a strong television background, having worked on shows such as Alias, Lost, Fringe, Westworld, Snowpiercer, Watchmen, and The Walking Dead. His most recent work includes The Boys, Fallout, and Shōgun.

Toye has previously worked with Amazon on the action thriller series The Terminal List and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, led by Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch, respectively.

The God of War game series comprises 10 games, of which six are home console titles, two portable console titles, one mobile game (God of War: Betrayal), and one text-based adventure (God of War: A Call from the Wilds).

Plans for a live-action adaptation have been in the works since 2005, initially as a feature-length idea, which eventually evolved into a series that was announced in 2022.
