A month after it released in theatres, Pranav Mohanlal's horror thriller Dies Irae is gearing up for its streaming release. The Rahul Sadasivan directorial, which released in theatres on Oct. 31, has been picked up by JioHotstar, where it will start streaming from Dec. 5.
In its review of the A-rated film, THE WEEK called it "the scariest Malayalam film of the year" and drew comparisons to similar examples from international cinema in the horror genre.
"Sadasivan has already demonstrated in Bhoothakaalam and Bramayugam that he doesn't think like any other filmmaker in Malayalam cinema right now. With Dies Irae, he once again proves the maxim that you can create maximum scares with a minimalist and formalist approach. There is an excellent attempt at misdirection in the film's early portions. Just when you think you're watching something familiar, the rug (or bedsheet) is pulled from under you. In terms of the measure of dread it evokes, it comes closer to veritable excursions in the genre from contemporary Korean cinema such as The Wailing and Exhuma," it added.
The lead technical team members were also lauded for their work in the film, chiefly cinematographer, Shehnad Jelal, editor Shafique Mohamed Ali, composer Christo Xavier, and the sound department.
Dies Irae, which also features Jibin Gopinath, Arun Ajikumar, and Sushmitha Bhat, among others, saw Rahul Sadasivan reteaming with Bramayugam producers Chakravarthy Ramachandra and S. Sashikanth, under their respective banners, Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios.
