Emraan Hashmi's latest film Haq is coming to theatres on November 7, and ahead of the release, on trailer launch day, the actor interacted with the press to give a sense of what the film is trying to say.
Yami Gautam plays the main character in the social drama based on the Supreme Court's landmark judgement in the Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case. It marks the first time that Hashmi and Gautam are sharing the screen.
Speaking to the attendees, Hashmi expressed his wish to see Muslims watch the film. Being one himself, the actor urged members of the community to see Haq as he believes the film has some important things to say through an unbiased neutral point of view.
“When I read a script like this, I see it as an actor, and for the first time in this film, I also had to bring in the perspective of a Muslim. Going back to the landmark case, the country was divided into two parts. One was on the side of religion and personal faith, the other was on the side of constitutional rights and secular rights. But, I wanted to see if the director and writer's point of view in this film is balanced, unbiased, and neutral. So the short answer is 'yes'. It was very neutral”.
Hashmi believes that most viewers will find the film "extremely balanced" and "pro-women", while further adding, “For my community, I felt that this is from a liberal Muslim point of view. I think this is a great piece of work. Muslims should really come and watch this film because you will connect with it in a very different way”.
The Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case revolves around the turbulent relationship between a couple following the man's involvement with a second woman, their divorce and his refusal to pay her maintanence money, and the woman's filing of a criminal suit against him under section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and their long legal battle.
Directed by Suparn S Varma, Haq is bankrolled jointly by Junglee Pictures, Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios.
