There seems to be an interesting new Netflix series on the horizon. This one comes from Álex Pina, the creator of 'Money Heist', along with Esther Martínez Lobato, who is known for his collaborations with Pina on the Money Heist spin-off 'Berlin', as well as his other shows such as 'Sky Rojo' and 'White Lines'.
The Spanish-language series, titled ‘El Refugio Atómico’ and marketed to English-speaking viewers as 'Billionaires' Bunker', is slated for a Sept. 19 premiere.
Billed as a crime drama, the plot teases an apocalyptic scenario where the principal characters — a group of billionaires — are forced to live in a confined, yet luxurious, setting with all the basic amenities, when World War III is about to break out.
The official synopsis reads: “Imagine that World War III is about to break out and a group of billionaires takes refuge in a luxury bunker: Kimera Underground Park. Through screens, they’ll watch the bewildering spectacle of the world they knew collapsing above their heads. As the situation outside becomes increasingly terrifying, they’ll enjoy an underground city with a basketball court, restaurant, zen garden, cocktail bar, psychologist’s couch, gym, and spa. Their ancient privilege will be reduced to a life adapted to a luxurious hole, an underground universe full of enigmas where a wound from the past will explode between two conflicting families.”
It's not yet known if the show will have multiple seasons, but the first is expected to span eight episodes.
The idea of having a group of people in a specially constructed environment — the fictional bunker is called Kimera Underground Park Resort — naturally brings to mind shows like 'Squid Game' and 'A Murder at the End of the World', aside from feature films like 'Cube' and 'The Platform'. However, ‘Billionaires’ Club’ brings with it the promise of something we haven’t seen before.
The makers reportedly employed virtual production technology at Netflix's Tres Cantos filmmaking hub to create realistic-looking projections of actual sets and locations, to emulate a 360-degree environment.
The principal cast comprises Miren Ibarguren, Joaquín Furriel, Natalia Verbeke, Carlos Santos, Montse Guallar, Pau Simón, Alicia Falcó, Agustina Bisio, and Álex Villazán, among others.
