Superstar Rajinikanth's latest film, Coolie directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is into its second weekend and the film has lost steam after a record-breaking opening weekend. This was expected, considering the extremely mixed reports the film had garnered upon release. From general reception, Coolie is being touted as Kanagaraj's weakest film in terms of screenplay, although Rajinikanth's fans have managed to enjoy the film.
The polarised opinion on the film has reflected in its weekdays collections, especially in Tamil Nadu where the drops were alarming when compared to the weekend. However, the positive for Coolie is that it remained steady from Monday till Friday and has shown a slight jump in collections on Saturday. As per the latest estimates, the film has managed to gross ₹5.05 crores on its second Saturday. When compared to recent biggies like The GOAT and Good Bad Ugly, this figure is on the lower side.
The Vijay-starrer is the only biggie in recent times to touch double-digits on its Second Saturday, an astounding feat given that The GOAT was also a film that had extremely mixed opinion among the public. Despite that, it managed to gross ₹10.72 crores on its second Saturday. The next best figures in this yardstick for a Tamil film recently is Siva Karthikeyan's Amaran that clocked ₹8.95 crores. The underdog blockbuster Dragon, featuring Pradeep, collected ₹5.31 crores while Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly managed to churn out ₹5.10 crores on its Second Saturday.
Across Tamil Nadu, Coolie collected ₹112.15 crores in its opening seven days with a whopping majority of those coming in the four-day extended holiday weekend. The film seems to have the legs to cross the ₹150-crores mark in Tamil Nadu, although it would need to show better stability on its weekdays and third weekend. If it does touch ₹150 crores, it will displace Good Bad Ugly as the highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu this year.
