Apple TV+'s 'Cape Fear' remake, backed by Scorsese and Spielberg, adds Amy Adams and Javier Bardem

The new, and third, adaptation of John D. MacDonald's novel 'The Executioners' will be a 10-episode series. J. Lee Thompson and Martin Scorsese directed the other two adaptations

First, there was director J. Lee Thompson's 1962 Cape Fear — an adaptation of John D MacDonald's novel The Executioners starring Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Polly Bergen.

Then came Martin Scorsese's 1991 Cape Fear — a more violent and R-rated reimagining of the story starring Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Robert De Niro. Although Steven Spielberg produced the latter through his company Amblin, he opted not to be credited for it.

Now, Apple TV+ has announced a long-format, 10-episode remake of the same story.

Amy Adams is set to take on the role Jessica Lange played in the Scorsese version. This time, though, the character is an attorney married to another attorney, the casting of whom is still underway. Javier Bardem has been cast as Max Cady, the psychopath played by Mitchum and De Niro in the previous versions.

Adams will executive produce the series with Bardem, Scorsese and Spielberg.

Nick Antosca, known for his work in the horror anthology series Channel Zero and the crime miniseries Candy, will serve as writer and showrunner. Antosca was one of the co-producers of the crime-horror drama Hannibal led by Mads Mikkelsen.

Adams recently got a Golden Globe nomination, for best performance by a female actor in a motion picture – musical or comedy, for the horror-comedy drama Nightbitch. She previously starred in the HBO mystery miniseries Sharp Objects, based on Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn's book of the same name.
