The title of the upcoming Mission: Impossible film ('The Final Reckoning') and the hints dropped in the first trailer have naturally led many to believe that there would be no more Mission Impossible films after this one.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Tom Cruise said it's difficult to answer that question. “You gotta see the movie. It’s a hard thing for me to discuss at the moment because it really is something that you have to experience,” he added, teasing that the second instalment of 'Dead Reckoning: Part 1' is “an epic, emotional journey of the entire franchise.”
Director Christopher McQuarrie, on the other hand, hopes the film will be a "satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc” without revealing if he'll make another one. “I’m pretty confident that people are going to feel that the title was appropriate.”
McQuarrie also teased insane stunts that seemingly raise the stakes to near-stratospheric (literally) levels for Ethan Hunt and gang. The latest still released by Empire shows Cruise in the middle of a challenging mid-air stunt that requires him to cling on to the wing of a 1930s Boeing Stearman biplane flying at 10,000 feet.
The director said he found the pressure of shooting all the action sequences in the film overwhelming, enough to make him feel like puking. “There are stunts in this movie that will melt your brain,” he says. "There would be a day in Africa — any day in Africa — where Tom would go out and do something that topped anything he had ever done before.”
Cruise shared that he had to train himself to breathe for certain stunts. “When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit.”
Paramount Pictures has slated the film for release on May 23, 2025.
