The 94th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. With 12 nods, Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was the film with the most nominations this year. Denis Villeneuve's Dune, which was nominated in 10 categories, won early Oscars for the best sound, best editing, best cinematography, best score, best production design and best visual effects in the controversial pre-taped announcement by the Academy this year.
CODA won the award for Best Picture. Actor Will Smith took home his first Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for The Eyes Of Tammy Faye. Campion won Best Director for the Netflix film The Power Of The Dog.
Smith apologised to the Academy his acceptance speech, shortly after he went on stage and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about hios wife Jada Pinkett Smith. “I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people," he said.
