Actor Johnny Depp’s security officer Sean Bett alleged that actress Amber Heard physically abused Depp during their marriage. He was giving his testimony during the hearing of Depp’s libel case against a British tabloid.

Depp has sued publishers of The Sun tabloid over an April 2018 article that called him a ‘wife beater’. In a written witness statement released as he appeared in court Thursday, security officer Sean Bett said that “throughout the course of Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard’s relationship, Ms. Heard was verbally and physically abusive towards Mr. Depp,” AP reported.

“Ms. Heard often behaved in this way when she had been drinking. I learnt quickly to recognize the signs, so that we were able to leave the situation before it escalated further,” he said.

Depp’s former romantic partners, Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis, also submitted their statements in support of Depp and said he was never violent towards them during their relationships. In a written witness statement, Ryder said she was “shocked, confused and upset when I heard the accusations” against Depp. Paradis said Heard’s abuse allegations were “nothing like the true Johnny I have known, and from my personal experience of many years, I can say he was never violent or abusive to me.”

Depp and Heard got divorced in 2017. In March 2019,  Depp sued Amber for $50 million for defamation after she accused him of domestic abuse and penned an op-ed in the Washington Post. Depp's lawsuit referred to Heard's allegations as a 'hoax' and has presented new evidence that it was actually Depp who was physically abused in the marriage, and not the other way around.
