Singer-songwriter Adam Schlesinger dies of coronavirus

The 51-year-old died at a hospital in New York

Emmy and Grammy award-winning musician Adam Schlesinger died of coronavirus on Wednesday. The 51-year-old, best known for rock band Fountains Of Wayne, died at a hospital in New York, his lawyer confirmed.

Adam was the bass player and co-songwriter of 90’s band. After the band’s run, he also went on to work behind many television shows and was known for his writing.

Schlesinger was nominated for 10 Emmys for writing comical songs across several television shows, of which he won three. He won the Grammy in 2009 for A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! He was also nominated for an Academy Award for writing the title song for the 1997 movie That Thing You Do, written and directed by Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks, who was also recently tested positive for coronavirus, tweeted that he was ‘terribly sad’.  “There would be no Playtone without Adam Schlesinger, without his That Thing You Do! He was a One-der. Lost him to Covid-19. Terribly sad today. Hanx,” he wrote in his tweet.

Recently, he also teamed up with actress Rachel Bloom as one of the songwriters behind Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a musical comedy series. Last year, Schlesinger, Bloom and Jack Dolgen won an Emmy for the show’s song, “Antidepressants Are So Not A Big Deal.”

According to reports, amid the coronavirus chaos, Bloom delivered her first child on Wednesday. She took to Instagram to share that this has been the most emotionally intense week of her life as she was had the joy of delivering her baby, while at the same time having a dear friend struggle for life with the coronavirus.

Schlesinger, who was diagnosed with coronavirus recently, was sedated and on ventilator support for several days, AP reported.
