The Maharashtra government had, on Friday, ordered closure of cinema halls, gyms, swimming pools and public parks in Mumbai and other cities till March 30.

However, on Sunday, Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor and his wife Mira Rajput were spotted working out at a Bandra gym, AntiGravity Club, attracting much criticism on social media.

According to Mumbai Mirror, the gym was opened exclusively for the couple on Sunday evening although it was shut during the day. While Kapoor worked out with gloves at the VIP section of the gym, his wife was at the general workout area, the Mumbai Mirror report had claimed.

Following the news reports, The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation sealed the gym on Monday and criticised the actor and the owner of the gym for "irresponsible behaviour".

Mumbai Mirror reported that the BMC has written to them both, slamming them for violating the government advisory and risking public safety.

On Saturday, Shahid Kapoor had announced that the team of his upcoming film Jersey has decided to suspend the shoot of the film to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. "At a time like this it is our social responsibility to do everything in our capacity to curb the spread of this virus. Team #Jersey is suspending shoot so as to enable all unit members to be with their families and in the safety of their homes. Be responsible. Stay safe," the actor had tweeted.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had invoked the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 to tackle the virus outbreak in the state and had said theatres, gymnasiums, swimming pools and parks in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nagpur, Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune will be closed till March 30. People should also avoid visiting malls and other crowded places, he added.

These decisions were taken as a precautionary measure, the chief minister said, adding that the epidemic was successfully contained in China's Wuhan city after it was virtually shut down.
