Kollywood actor Suriya, who is gearing up for the release of his action thriller Kaappaan, in which he plays an officer of the National Security Guard, recently quoted Periyar to say it is not Godse who is to be blamed for the death of M.K. Gandhi.
At a press conference, the actor said after the assassination of M.K. Gandhi, many caste and religion-based incidents of violence broke out in several parts of the country. While others were blaming the assassin, Nathuram Godse, Periyar said, 'Bring Godse's gun, let's break it into pieces!'

Clarifying his remark, Periyar had said blaming Godse for Gandhi's death is similar to blaming a gun as Godse was merely a weapon. It was an ideology that influenced Godse to kill him, the activist had pointed out.
According to media reports, the actor made these remarks while speaking about his upcoming movie Kaappaan which deals with terrorism. He said the plot of the movie bears semblance to a lot of the incidents that happened in reality where it is hard identify a single person as the perpetrator.
Directed by K.V. Anand, Kaappaan, which also stars Mohanlal, Sayyeshaa, Arya and Boman Irani in the lead, is expected to be released on Friday. Mohanlal plays the prime minister of the country in the movie.
