'96' Telugu remake: Can Sharwanand and Samantha recreate Vijay Sethupathi-Trisha magic?

via IMDb

96 arguably was one of the finest romantic dramas that Tollywood has seen in a long time. Directed by C. Prem Kumar, this Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan starrer won the hearts of every cine goer, thanks to some fine performances, great storytelling and an amazing soundtrack.

Now, Prem Kumar is gearing up for the Telugu remake of the movie, with Sharwanand and Samantha playing Ram and Janu.

Recently, there were reports that the school portions of the movie, which tugged at the heartstrings of the audience, will be replaced by scenes from college. Prem Kumar, however, scotched such rumors saying there is no truth in the reports that the school scenes in the movie will be changed to college portions as the very essence of the movie is the romantic journey of two school students.

According to media reports, the director said when the remake rights were bought, it was decided that the movie will be replicated with minor changes to suit the taste of Telugu audience.

It is also believed that Govind Vasantha, who was behind the music, will make his Tollywood debut with the 96 remake. The shooting of the movie is likely to begin by the end of February.

While the director and music director may have been retained for the remake, it remains to be seen if Sharwanand and Samantha would be able to recreate the onscreen chemistry and charm of the original leads, Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan.

Meanwhile, the movie will also be remade in Kannda as '99', with Ganesh and Bhavana playing the lead.
