'Petta' director reveals about Rajinikanth's character, villains in the movie and more

Karthik Subbaraj has made quite a name for himself in Kollywood. The director of sleeper hits Pizza and Jigarthanda is gearing up for the biggest release of his career this Pongal, Petta, starring Rajinikanth, Vijay Sethupathi, Trisha and Nawazuddin Siddiqui among others. The trailer of the film appears to made have every Rajinikanth fan delighted as the movie offers a throwback to the Thalaivar days of yore.

In a recent interview, Karthik Subbaraj has said Rajinikanth's in character Petta, Kaali, is a tribute to his character in the film Mullum Malarum. In Mullum Malarum, which is considered to be a breakthrough for Rajinikanth as an actor, he plays Kali, a troublemaker who clashes with his superior at a power plant.

Karthik Subbaraj said there are many scenes in Petta, like the one where Rajinikanth opens a gate —seen in the trailer of the movie—that are inspired from the earlier films of the superstar like Apoorva Raagangal. "There are shots that people will relate to and connect with his old films," the director told the Scroll in the interview.

The director further said he wanted to make Petta memorable for himself as a fan and called Rajinikanth "one of the greatest performers in our country".

Revealing about the antagonists in Petta, he said Rajinikanth believed that it is important to have strong antagonists for a film to have the "kick". Karthik Subbaraj said he roped in Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vijay Sethupathi as the story needed two strong villains.
