The audio of superstar Rajinikanth's much-awaited Kaala, directed by Pa Ranjith, was released at 9am on Wednesday by producer Dhanush. The album, packed with eight upbeat and melody songs, has made Rajinikanth fans go gaga. With a mix of different genres, the songs lyrics are politically loaded, too.
The audio, though released online, will be launched formally in the evening by Dhanush's Wunderbar films which is producing the film. The grand launch will happen at the sprawling YMCA grounds in Chennai at 6.30pm where Kaala's music composer Santhosh Narayanan will perform live.
On May 1, a single track from the film—Semma weightu—was released. It was an instant hot online and has garnered over three million views, thus pushing expectations on the film above Rajinikanth's earlier Kabali.

While the Tamil album features nine songs, other languages will have eight songs each. A mix of melodies, upbeat Kuthu songs, and rap, Kaala album promises to be an audio treat not just for Rajinikanth fans but also for Tamil Nadu voters who are looking for a change in the political scene in the state. As Tamil Nadu waits for Rajinikanth's highly-anticipated political plunge, the album and lyrics talk not just politics, but point a finger at societal inequalities and corruption.
Semma weightu, for instance, talks about the working class. The lyrics like Odhuka nenacha, verati adipom meaning we will drive away those who try to sideline us, speaks volumes about the political allusions in the entire film. Rajinikanth is addressed as Kaala settu and the words "Poraduvom" tells how Kaala is totally against oppression and will take on communal politics. Another song Nikkal, Nikkal is about fighting for rights. Another number Thanga Sela, written by Arunraja Kamaraj, is a perfect kuthu song. The song portrays the romance between Rajinikanth and Easwari Rao.
Like his earlier works like Madras and Kabali, Kaala, too, reflects Pa Ranjith's style as the lyrics talk about caste hegemony. Lines like Pathingi adangi vaazha naanga innum slave ah [Are we still slaves to hide and live in subjugation?], and the other Ezhayoda vaithula adichi bank balance ah yethatha [Don’t hit the poor and then raise our bank balance], talk volumes about how Kaala will strike down heavily on the ruling class and those in power.
Another track that deserves mention is Kannamma—a melodious, soothing number sung by Pradeep Kumar and Dhee, with lyrics by Uma Devi Kannama.
The songs have now set the tone. Not just for Kaala release on June 7, but for a big political leap for the superstar in the near future as he aims to fill the leadership vacuum created by demise of Jayalalithaa and silence of Karunanidhi.
