As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding draws closer, the Royal Mint has decided to honour the couple with a commemorative coin. The release of the coin has the public in Britain swooning over their upcoming wedding.

The five pound coin features a portrait of the soon-to-be-newlyweds, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle looking “lovingly into each others' eyes”. It was designed by Jody Clark, a member of the Royal Mint’s Coin Design team. The image of Prince Harry and Meghan on the coin is based on the photographs taken at the Sunken Garden in Kensington Palace when they announced their engagement. The inclusion of Meghan's hand on Harry’s is a key detail which shows the strong affection between the two.

The gold proof version of the coin is priced at £1,980, the silver proof at £82.50 and the brilliant uncirculated coin costs £13.

Commemorative coins have been issued by the royal family since 1935 for various occasions of celebration with different denominations. Prince William and Kate Middleton had coins issued for their wedding, Princess Charlotte and Prince George had coins made to celebrate the royal births and Queen Elizabeth II released a coin to commemorate her sapphire jubilee (marking 65 years of her reign).

Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding is unlike the other royal weddings, and the coin is the first historic account of their union. It is the first move by which the country welcomes the Meghan as one of their own. Their story has been called a modern day fairy-tale as they were fortunate enough to follow their hearts. Their engagement had made quite a stir as Meghan is the first divorcee to marry into the royal family in 81 years. However, Britain is eagerly awaiting the day this lovely couple will say “I do”.

Prince Harry and Meghan will tie the knot on May 19 at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
