Ten professional-grade drones, described as military- or defence-grade UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), have been seized at Delhi airport after customs officials intercepted three Indian passengers arriving from Hong Kong through Vietnam.
The drones, valued at more than ₹1.03 crore, were recovered after the arrival of the three passengers at Terminal 3 on September 25. Customs officers intercepted them while they were attempting to cross the green channel, based on intelligence developed by officials, reported news agency PTI.
A detailed inspection of their baggage resulted in the recovery of 10 drones and a complete set of accessories, including controllers, camera-equipped gimbals, cables, propellers and joysticks.
An assessment by a Chartered Engineer found that the seized UAVs were professional-grade systems carrying capabilities beyond conventional drones.
The drones were equipped with thermal imaging and laser range finders, according to the assessment. Based on these capabilities, they were classified as military- or defence-grade UAVs.
The assessment also found that the drones required mandatory registration with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Thermal imaging and laser range-finding capabilities were among the key features identified during the examination of the seized systems.
The passengers were apprehended, and the drones and associated equipment were seized under the Customs Act, 1962.
Officials said further investigation into the case is underway.
