India's high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle programme is set to receive a boost, as Bharat Forge and aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney Canada join hands to evaluate the integration of advanced turboprop engines into the platform.

Bharat Forge Ltd said on Tuesday that it has teamed up with Pratt & Whitney Canada to evaluate the integration of the latter's turboprop engines into a High-Altitude, Long-Endurance (HALE) UAV programme designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Under the collaboration, Pratt & Whitney Canada will evaluate engine compatibility, performance and installation requirements for the unmanned aircraft.

Bharat Forge, meanwhile, will take the lead in engine-airframe integration, including installation design and systems interfaces, using its engineering, manufacturing and aerospace systems capabilities.

The partnership is aimed at supporting India's indigenous unmanned aerial systems efforts and strengthening domestic aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities under the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

"By combining Pratt & Whitney's globally proven propulsion technologies with Bharat Forge's engineering and systems integration expertise, we aim to support development of a world-class HALE platform that strengthens India's strategic self-reliance and defence preparedness," Bharat Forge Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director Amit Kalyani said.

The proposed collaboration will bring together Pratt & Whitney Canada's propulsion technology and Bharat Forge's domestic engineering and systems integration capabilities for the DRDO-developed platform.

Ashish Saraf, Vice President and Country Head at Pratt & Whitney, said the collaboration reflected the company's commitment to supporting India's aerospace and defence ambitions.

"Pratt & Whitney Canada's turboprop engines have a proven legacy of reliability in demanding operational environments, which is exactly what's needed for India's HALE program," Saraf said.
