Every fighter pilot's journey begins far from a combat jet's roar. It begins in a gentle propeller plane, where an instructor guides a nervous cadet through first take-offs and landings, instrument flying, and recovering when the aircraft rolls or noses over unexpectedly. For years, India taught this chapter on the Swiss Pilatus PC-7 Mk II. That is changing.

Come 18 September 2026, during an event in Bengaluru, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will hand over mutliple HAL platforms—HTT 40, LCA Trainer and the Dhruv NG—to the government in the presence of the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu.

Together, these platforms cover a pilot's first lessons, the leap onto a fighter, and a civilian helicopter for oil rigs, ambulances and passengers. India could design fighters and helicopters, yet imports trainers and civil helicopters. That gap is closing.

The Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40) is India's answer for this first-stage flying training. The first three, two from Bengaluru and one from Nashik, belong to a March 2023 order for 70 aircraft worth about Rs 6,838 crore.

“Its two seats sit one behind the other (tandem seating), and it is fully aerobatic. Its air-conditioned "glass cockpit" swaps old dials for digital screens, like a modern car dashboard. Its Martin-Baker "zero-zero" ejection seats can save both occupants even at zero height and zero speed, such as on the ground. A Honeywell TPE331-12B turboprop, a turbine engine that spins a propeller, gives it a top speed of about 450 kmph and a range near 1,000 km, and it can fly as high as about 6,000 metres,” explained defence and space analyst Girish Linganna.

However, the road has not been smooth. Engine shortages pushed deliveries beyond the original 2025–26 target until Honeywell's supplies began in 2026. HAL's two lines can now build about 20 aircraft a year together. Indian content, near 56 per cent today, is set to cross 60 per cent.

Next comes the LCA FOC trainer, a two-seat Tejas Mk-1 built to Final Operational Clearance, the fully cleared combat standard. The trainee sits in front and the instructor behind, under a lengthened canopy. They practise combat flying in a jet that handles like the single-seat fighter. These two-seat jets finish the first 40-aircraft Tejas order. “Single-seat fighters were built first, so the trainers had to wait. They arrive as the IAF expands the Tejas family with 83 Mk-1A jets and then 97 more, many of them twin-seaters. A third Nashik line is lifting annual Tejas output,” remarked Linganna.

Dhruv NG, the next-generation civil version of HAL's Advanced Light Helicopter, carries the same factory strength into daily life. Naidu had flagged off its first flight in Bengaluru on 30 December 2025. This week it moves from display to work. Pawan Hans ordered ten helicopters for over Rs 1,800 crore. Four arrive now; the rest follow this financial year. The first will likely ferry ONGC crews to and from offshore platforms.

This 5.5-tonne helicopter uses two Indian-made Shakti engines, so it can keep flying if one fails. It has a civil-approved digital cockpit, seats built to absorb a crash, and fuel tanks that seal small leaks. It flies at about 285 kmph, covers some 630 km with spare fuel, stays up about three hours 40 minutes, and can climb to about 6,000 metres, high enough for many Himalayan and plateau routes. The cabin can hold four to six VIP seats, up to 14 passengers, or four stretchers with medical crew. Built largely from Indian material, it supports HAL's plan to grow civil work from a small share toward a quarter of turnover in ten years, so India need not import every air ambulance and offshore helicopter.

Interestingly, Ravi Kota, HAL's 22nd Chairman and Managing Director, in the chair since 1 May 2026, after D.K. Sunil retired, is called the "LCA man” in defence circles.

A mechanical engineer from Malnad College of Engineering and an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and Toulouse, Kota headed the Tejas division and helped put the Tejas fleet into service. He also worked on contracts for 180 Tejas jets and 156 Prachand light combat helicopters. He is trying to make HAL globally competitive through innovation, Artificial Intelligence, operational excellence and its people.
