Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar PVSM, AVSM, NM, on Thursday, assumed office as the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS), bringing with him nearly four decades of experience across operational, command and strategic appointments in the Indian Navy.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988, and specialises in gunnery and missile systems.

Over a career spanning more than 37 years, he has commanded a range of frontline warships, including INS Nashak, INS Vibhuti and INS Kirpan. He was also the commissioning commanding officer of the stealth frigate INS Trikand.

One of the highlights of his career was commanding the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, during which the Navy successfully integrated and operationalised the carrier's air wing, significantly enhancing India's maritime power projection capabilities.

Vice Admiral Kochhar has also held several key staff appointments at Naval Headquarters, including Joint Director of Naval Plans, Director of Staff Requirements and Principal Director DSCT. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the Naval War College, Goa, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom, he has played an important role in shaping naval strategy, force planning and capability development.

After being promoted to Flag Rank in 2018, he served as Assistant Controller of Carrier Projects and Assistant Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, overseeing critical naval modernisation programmes. In 2021, he took command of the Western Fleet, one of the Navy's most important operational formations.

He later served as Commandant of the National Defence Academy, where he oversaw improvements in training standards and infrastructure. In May 2024, he assumed charge as Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command and led the command through a challenging security environment, including high-tempo operations during Operation Sindoor.

Prior to becoming Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Kochhar served as Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, India's only tri-services theatre command, where he focused on enhancing jointness and operational integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force.

For his distinguished service, he has been awarded the Nao Sena Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Param Vishisht Seva Medal, reflecting his contributions to India's maritime security and naval modernisation.
