In a move aimed at protecting the Delhi NCR region from various aerial threats, including aircraft, drones and missiles, the defence establishment is planning to deploy an indigenous air defence system.
The decision comes barely a few months after Pakistan attempted to target multiple Indian cities with missiles and drones during the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict following Operation Sindoor.

According to news agency ANI, the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) would be based around homegrown missiles such as the Very Short-Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) system, which is a man-portable, infrared-homing missile designed for neutralising low-altitude threats like drones, helicopters, and cruise missiles, in the Delhi NCR region.
Quoting defence sources, ANI said the project in this regard is being processed by the defence ministry.

The defence system, which will be handled by the Indian Air Force, will be responsible for ensuring the safety of major installations in the Delhi NCR.
According to the report, the earlier plan was to deploy the US-made National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System-II. The decision to deploy India-made defence system, which will be developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with production agencies, is expected to be a major boost to defence manufacturing in India.
