Navika Sagar Parikrama II, the circumnavigation by two female officers of the Indian Navy, Lt Cdr Roopa A. and Lt Cdr Dilna K., onboard the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini completed the third and most challenging phase of the journey as it entered Port Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands, located on East Falkland Island.
This marks a major milestone in the vessel’s journey of circumnavigating the globe, according to the defence ministry.
The two officers are expected to interact with the local community and share their experiences during the voyage and India’s Naval traditions during their brief stay. "The vessel’s safe arrival at Port Stanley is a demonstration of India’s growing maritime reach and commitment to fostering global goodwill through Naval diplomacy," the ministry said.
During the third phase of the journey, the vessel faced three cyclones, while passing through Point Nemo, known as the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility. The duo also passed through the treacherous waters of Drake Passage before crossing the Cape Horn.
The Navika Sagar Parikrama initiative underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to gender empowerment and maritime excellence, the ministry said, adding that the expedition aims to promote ocean sailing, self-reliance, The expedition, which showcases the resilience, courage, and skill of the Indian Navy’s women officers, serve as an inspiration for young aspirants, encouraging greater participation of women in maritime and defence sectors, a statement from the ministry read.
INSV Tarini, which began the journey from Goa, already passed through the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans.
Following their stop in Port Stanley, the two officers will continue their expedition, sailing through Cape Town before returning to India.
