Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Centre is executing 15 new projects in the northeast to put all the state capitals of the northeast on the rail map. Modi inaugurated the 60 MW Tuirial Hydro Electric Power Project (HEPP) on his visit to Mizoram. He said the Centre has been proactively following the 'Act East Policy'. "As a gate-way to South East Asia, Mizoram stands to gain immensely from this," said the Prime Minister.

Import tax on cellphones hiked
India has increased the import tax on dozens of electronic products such as mobile phones and television sets. The rise in tax from 10 percent to 15 percent on handsets will help curb supplies from overseas and build up the domestic industry.
NASA to survey unexplored Antarctic areas
NASA is launching a study on unexplored stretch of Antarctic ice. A team led by two NASA scientists is all set to embark on a 750-kilometre expedition packed with extreme cold-weather gear and scientific instruments. The survey achieves significance since even small amounts of melt across areas as vast as Greenland or Antarctica can cause the sea level to rise.
Karnataka denies permission to Sunny Leone
The Karnataka government decided not to permit Bollywood actress Sunny Leone's New Year eve show in the state. Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and others have been opposing the show alleging that the invitation to Sunny Leone will be an 'assault' on the city's culture. "Let them organise events related to Kannada culture and literature, which is our heritage," said Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy.
