Previous employee estimates calculate the severance pay to be one week of base pay for every six months of service

As Amazon prepares for its biggest sales event, the Great Indian festival, the e-commerce giant has initiated yet another round of job cuts. An official email statement from a company official on Wednesday said the latest layoffs will primarily affect a small number of jobs in the Amazon Stores division, which oversees its main e-commerce website.
The latest cuts affect fewer than 1,000 employees. Affected employees from the UK and India reportedly wrote in an internal Slack channel that they received emails informing them that their jobs were being cut as part of the team’s restructuring. The messages indicated that the job cuts took place across multiple business units, including marketplace support, customer service and engineering roles.
Employees also expressed concern about the severance pay and internal job postings. According to a January 2026 update from Amazon, most US-based employees were given 90 days to look for a new role internally. In India, large establishments with more than 300 workers should give employees a 3-month written notice.
For employees who could not find a new role, or did not want to look for another job role, the company promised transition support, including severance pay, outplacement services and health insurance benefits.
Previous employee estimates calculate the severance pay to be one week of base pay for every six months of service. For an employee with 3 years' experience and a ₹1,60,000 base monthly salary (₹40,000 per week), they would receive ₹2,40,000 as a lump sum.
These layoffs are part of a larger round of around 30,000 job cuts that began in late 2025 as the company gradually reprioritises its spending to invest more in AI projects. Reports indicate that Amazon plans to invest $220 billion in data centres, memory chips and other AI infrastructure across multiple countries. The company has announced it will specifically spend $48 billion to expand AI infrastructure in India.
