Highlighting his vision for West Bengal’s industrial growth and its role in India's trillion-dollar economy, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani visited Kolkata on Friday. He laid the foundation stone for the ₹4,000-crore, 2,000-bed 'Adani Arogya Mandir' in New Town, where 1,000 beds will offer affordable medical treatment for many people.
“Development cannot ultimately be measured in cargo volumes, megawatts, tonnes or terabytes. Its true measure must remain deeply human,” said Gautam Adani while speaking to entrepreneurs at a programme organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
The Adani Group chairman said their commitment to Bengal goes far beyond individual projects. “For the coming decade, our intent is to deploy ₹1 lakh crore across Bengal. This will span ports, logistics, power generation, power transmission and distribution, roads, bridges, ropeways, green cement as well as hyper-scale data centres,” explained Adani.
Initial plans include restoring the erstwhile State Secretariat Writers Building and the Kumartuli ghats, where artisans have made idols of Goddess Durga for decades. “While we build for Bengal’s future, we must also honour its ghats, its literature, its architecture, its festivals and its extraordinary cultural confidence. It is therefore our privilege to support the revitalisation of the iconic Kumartuli ghat, build a curated Durga Puja programme to celebrate Bengal’s artists and take Maa to audiences across the world and support the conservation of the historic Writers Building,” said the Adani Group chairman.
References were made to Swami Vivekananda, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and Rabindranath Tagore. Bengal was celebrated as the land that awakened the nation's cultural ethos—symbolised by 'Vande Mataram' creator Bankim Chandra Chatterjee—while the speech also highlighted the state's strategic advantages, including its geography, intellect, and historic industrial legacy.
Speaking about starting his journey with the Mundra Port in Gujarat, Gautam Adani spoke about Bengal becoming a milestone in the company’s journey. “With the same humility and sense of responsibility, it is my prayer to Maa that Bengal in the East becomes my second Karma Bhumi not because Bengal must become another Gujarat, but because Bengal must become the strongest version of Bengal itself,” said Adani.
Earlier in the day, Gautam Adani and his wife offered prayers at the Kalighat temple. Adani’s visit signals the group’s strong industrial focus on West Bengal, aligning with key development goals championed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s administration. A day earlier, Adhikari noted that the Ambanis and their team would also visit Kolkata next week to explore business opportunities. The BJP-led government has pledged to clear bottlenecks and streamline land acquisition to transform the state into a lucrative investment hub.
