Adidas on Wednesday confirmed layoffs at its India Tech Hub in Gurugram, impacting nearly half of its workforce at the centre, according to news outlet Wocult.
The sportswear behemoth said it was a “difficult decision” as the company seeks to change its operating model.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to align our operating model with the evolving needs of the business, we have made the difficult decision to reduce a number of roles within our Technology organisation in India," Adidas said in a statement.
“These changes are intended to simplify parts of our organization, strengthen critical capabilities, and position adidas for long-term success in a rapidly evolving business and technology environment," it added.
Among those affected include software engineers, data scientists and data engineers. Reports claimed that some of the laid off employees received exit letters on September 15 while others would continue till December 15.
“We are deeply grateful to our colleagues for their many contributions to Adidas. We are committed to supporting our impacted colleagues with transition assistance during this time,” the company said in the statement.
This comes after Oracle’s India unit reportedly laid of around 2,000 to 2,500 employees on September 14 in its latest round of retrenchment. In a 6 am email, the company informed the affected employees that their roles were being eliminated as part of a broader organisational change.
The US-based tech giant, which has a significant India footprint, including product engineering teams, support functions and development teams, recently raised the estimated cost of its restructuring programme by $700 million to about $2.8 billion, a plan that includes employee severance and contract terminations. The number of global employees affected in the latest round has not been disclosed.
