Shares of Sensex component Infosys, one of India’s major IT services players, soared as much as 2.3 per cent on the Indian equity markets on Friday.

On Thursday evening, Infosys announced that its board approved the IT major’s largest-ever share buyback programme worth Rs 18,000 crore.

Infosys also announced on Friday morning that exemptive relief was granted by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the buyback.

This programme involves Infosys buying back 10 crore fully paid-up equity shares of a face value of Rs 5 each, representing up to 2.41 per cent of the total paid-up equity share capital, at Rs 1,800 per share.

The per-share price for the buyback was a premium of around 19 per cent over Thursday’s closing price of Rs 1,509.50 apiece on BSE. As the markets opened on Friday, Infosys stock promptly jumped 2.33 per cent to a high of Rs 1544.65 per share. In the first two hours on the BSE, 3 lakh shares worth close to Rs 46 crore changed hands.

According to the exchanges, Infosys is now valued at around Rs 6.3 lakh crore.

In the exchange filing on Thursday, Infosys stated: “The Board of Directors of the Company at their meeting held on September 11, 2025, has considered and approved a proposal to buyback equity shares for an amount of Rs 18,000 crore at a price of Rs 1,800 per equity share.”

This share buyback is close to the 2022 buyback by rival TCS, when the Tata firm bought back 4 crore equity shares for Rs 4,500 per share for around Rs 18,000 crore.
