Rejoice, cleanliness-loving consumers, for daily personal hygiene products are set to see a massive dip in retail prices after the latest GST reforms come into effect on September 22.

According to the GST Council meeting outcome, Hair oils, shampoos, dental floss, toothpastes, toothpowders, shaving creams, shaving lotions, aftershave lotions, and toilet soaps all have a slashed 5 per cent GST. Earlier, these attracted 18 per cent GST (except toothpowders, which had 12 per cent GST).

Another point to note is that toothpaste, toothbrush, and dental floss got a new 5 per cent GST, but not mouthwash.

According to the ministry, only these were under "basic dental hygiene goods" and not mouthwash.

Major mouthwash brands in India include Colgate Plax and Listerine.

"The GST rate has been reduced to 5 per cent only on certain goods that are daily-use items for most segments of the population," the Finance Ministry stated when asked why only certain items were selected for the GST cut.

It is not just basic hygiene that got reprieve from indirect taxes. Another commonly used item, vision-correcting spectacles and goggles, would now attract a lower 5 per cent GST.

However, "spectacles and other goggles other than for correcting vision continue to attract a GST rate of 18 per cent."
