Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman sought to offer a new definition to GDP as she said the Narendra Modi-led government is focused on GDP (governance, development and performance).

Sitharaman in her pre-election Budget, which is technically a vote on account and popularly termed an interim Budget, said besides the gross domestic product, the government is equally focused on a more comprehensive GDP – governance, development and performance.

The minister said there is macroeconomic stability and the economy is doing well.

She claimed that the needs and aspirations of the poor, women and farmers are the government’s highest priorities.

The minister observed that the government has assisted 25 crore people to get freedom from multidimensional poverty in last 10 years. She further said the government is addressing systematic inequalities which have plagued society.
