Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday slammed the Centre for its lack of job creation, calling it a form of an "epidemic" under the BJP rule. "Lack of job creation in the country is a sign of stopping of the wheel of development. This disease has taken the form of an epidemic in the BJP regime," Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet.

"About 35 lakh jobs have been lost in the construction sector. The big IT companies are about to end about 40 lakh jobs," she claimed.

The Congress general secretary has been attacking the government over the state of the economy. In October, she had asked the Centre to stop running "a comedy circus" and instead, focus on improving the economy.

Priyanka's comments come as the government's GDP data is keenly awaited on November 29. According to experts, the GDP growth rate, which plunged to a six-year low of 5 per cent in the first quarter, is expected to further fall to 4.2-4.7 per cent in the second quarter. Economic indicators such as the IIP, core industrial growth rate and retail inflation figures have been signalling at a further slump in the current slowdown.

While the Index of Industrial Production fell 4.3 per cent in September, the output of core infrastructure industries shrank by 5.2 per cent in the same month. This was the second straight month of contraction has taken the IIP to its lowest level since it shrank by 5 per cent in October 2011. On the other hand, retail inflation surged to 4.62 per cent in October.
