Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Union Railway and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for his comments on Nobel laureate economist Abhijit Banerjee, saying the BJP leaders were busy undermining the achievements of others.

Gandhi said even though the country's economy is in shambles, the government is busy running a comedy circus.

"BJP leaders are busy undermining the achievements of others instead of doing the work they have been assigned. The man who won the Nobel prize did his work with honesty and then won the award," she said in a tweet in Hindi.

"Your (government''s) work is to improve the economy and not run a comedy circus," Gandhi said.

Goyal had courted controversy on Friday after he said Banerjee's suggestion of a minimum income scheme to the Congress party was rejected by Indian voters and there was no need to "accept what he thinks". The minister also described Banerjee as a "Left-leaning" person.

“It is not necessary to agree with what he says and especially when the people of this country rejected his suggestion, there is no need to accept what he thinks," the Union minister had said.
