Chennai may have to wait to find out if they would make it to the IPL finals this weekend, but they have emerged the super kings already when it comes to a nationwide IPL video-loading time test.

Chennai topped 4G speeds in a nation-wide survey conducted by the international mobile analytics firm Opensignal. The survey was done in 50 cities across India by measuring  the average time taken for a mobile video to load and for the picture to start moving. The shorter the video load time, the better.

Opensignal did the survey considering the immense live-video viewership the ongoing IPL cricket matches have garnered on mobile devices—something that broke through this year along with the explosion in streaming content in the country. IPL, which has been going on since the beginning of summer and has a viewership of millions on online streaming platform Hotstar, will come to a conclusion Sunday evening.

Chennai emerged the king of 4G video load time among the eight IPL cities with an average of six seconds. Kolkata rode in second with an average time of 6.2 seconds, followed by Hyderabad that shone in third with 6.4 seconds. Bengaluru, home to Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chandigarh, home of the Kings XI Punjab, scored under the 7-second mark, with Mumbai, Delhi, and Jaipur bringing up the tail.

"With the use of smartphones for watching video content becoming highly prevalent today, download speeds are an important aspect that service providers need to be cognisant of,” pointed out Peter Boyland, senior analyst at Opensignal. “(While) Chennai was the leader, several other cities has similar download speeds, highlighting that India's video experience is moving in the right direction. As mobile habits change and big data bundles become more affordable, millions of Indians are turning to their smartphones as their main way of watching video. This presents a significant opportunity for mobile network operators to focus on providing seamless consumer experience by improving their offerings,” he added.
