Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a nationwide crackdown on the state’s illegal porn industry as part of his efforts to enforce and safeguard the country's so-called “traditional values.”
According to reports, the adult video industry was booming in Moscow, and several social media models were making a fortune by using the Telegram app and the OnlyFans website to sell their explicit videos to subscribers. Now, Russian law enforcement has started charging criminal cases against content creators posting porn on OnlyFans.
Sofya Vershinina, a.k.a. Sonya Marmeladova (named after the God fearing and family-devoted character from Fyodor Dostoevsky's 'Crime and Punishment'), is one such young influencer whose fame skyrocketed among Russian youth after she reportedly earned £300,000 from selling X-rated videos and intimate content on the Telegram messenger. The 21-year-old was living a luxurious life in Russia's capital city, thanks to her income from OnlyFans and other sources.
However, Putin's crackdown means Sofya is now banned from using her internet accounts for three years, media reports said. While she escaped prison time by a whisker, a hefty fine of £45,000 (₹57.9 lakh) has been imposed on her, they added. Several OnlyFans models are behind bars pending hearings in Russia for breaking the rules.
According to British tabloids, Sofya avoided jail by pleading guilty and expressing remorse. But if she breaches the conditions, including the ban on her online revenue sources, her three-year suspended jail sentence could take effect. She owned a gold iPhone 16 Pro Max, which reportedly remains seized, while her sex toys and accessories that were confiscated as evidence in the case were returned.
