When Asha Bhosle revealed why the Mangeshkar sisters loved white sarees

Aredent fans would undoubtedly know Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar were known for their white sarees. The legendary singer, who passed away on Sunday aged 92, had once revealed why the siblings loved their white sarees and often used them more than any other colour.

When Asha Bhosle appeared on Amrita Rao and RJ Anmol’s podcast, ‘Couple of Things’, she reportedly said that all her sisters had a penchant for white sarees. They believed that they looked better in simple, single-colour sarees than in coloured alternatives. The legendary singer also used the opportunity to tell the world how Lata Mangeshkar reacted when she found out that Asha Bhosle had started liking pink sarees.

"Apart from me and Didi, our other sisters also used to wear white sarees in those days. We felt that white sarees suited us. If we wore coloured sarees, we thought we might look darker. That’s why we wore white sarees," Loksatta said in a report citing the podcast.

"Later, I started wearing pink sarees. Didi once gave me a look with her eyes, as if asking when this change happened. From then on, I started wearing pink sarees at home. Sarees from Kolkata were cheap back then, so we mostly wore those," the Marathi media report quoted Asha Bhosle as saying in Couple of Things.

Born on 8 September 1933 in Sangli in Maharashtra, she was initiated into music by her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, just as her sisters were. Music was perhaps her destiny. Of the four sisters, Lata, Usha, and Asha were playback singers, while Meena is a music composer, as is their brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

Asha Bhosle bids farewell

The Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Asha Bhosle was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday evening after experiencing acute uneasiness. President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday condoled the demise of the legendary playback singer, saying it has created a huge void in the world of music.

"The passing of Asha Bhosle Ji has created a huge void in the world of music. Her legendary career as an iconic singer has defined an era of music in India," the President said. Murmu added that she had fond memories of having interacted with Bhosle personally.

"She led her life on her own terms as an artist and as an individual. With her melodious and timeless voice, she enriched Indian music for decades," the President said. "Her music will live forever. Her demise is an irreparable loss to music lovers. I convey my heartfelt condolences to her family and countless admirers."
